Nut harvesting and dust plumes seem to go hand in hand but they don’t have to. The San Joaquin Valley Air Pollution Control District (SJVAPCD) has launched the Low Dust Nut Harvester Replacement Program to help reduce how much dust gets stirred up by harvesting nuts such as walnuts and almonds. Oftentimes when harvesters are gathering the nuts and separating them from the dirt, the dirt causes large dust clouds over the machines. The SJVAPCD has worked with ag representatives and the Almond Board of California to evaluate various nut harvesters that cause less dust dispersion in an effort to reduce overall dust emissions in the area. As a result, they are offering funding for the replacement of harvesters and sweepers that are dated with newer equipment that integrates low-dust technology.
